So what is a portrait readings? It is the newest cultural event for clubs, organizations and churches to build community. It is a theater event, honoring special members lives through oil portrait paintings and life stories readings. Premier portrait artist Nanci Burnside creates a magical evening. It’s new and clearly out of the box. You will not be disappointed. After 188 portraits and life stories are compiled, a published book will showcase area organizations and the lives they are changing. Grace Williams, head of resident services at St. Andrews said, “It was the best event she ever witnessed.” At 7 pm the auditorium lights were turned off and two art studio spot lights lit the dark stage. One framed the oil portrait painted by Ms. Burnside; the other lit the model who was posed in the same position, wearing the same clothing. For one hour the audience played art critic. They compared 14 live models to their portrait paintings while they listened to the fascinating life stories narrated by Ms. Burnside. One story that stood out was from the perspective of a young 16 year old German girl living in Hamburg during WWI and her reception upon relocating to America in the late 40’s. Everyone grew closer as they learned interesting tid-bits about their neighbors. Doors were opened. Nanci’s vision is to paint 188 portraits, gather the lifestories, produce many mini- Portrait Reading Events and when finished publish an art/story book. This new venue builds bridges for deeper friendships, increase public awareness and has the ability to change lives. The hearing of testimonies is powerful. Recipients receive a beautiful Life Legacy Portrait to pass down to their ancestors and when they are no longer remembered, the portrait painting and lifestory will tell their testimony. |

Was a fun evening. Above photos show inside Girls Club. The shuttle bus brought us to new art
district in Ft. Lauderdale called FAT village. It is a bunch of warehouses, bohemian style that
artists have made into studio's/galleries.

live 6 hour session. A one hour lunch
break was taken to gather the
information for their life story. Some

Participants and family members view the
finished portraits and proof read their life
story at the private 188 Preview Party. A
few nights later at the stage production,
members and guests experience their first
ever portrait reading.
This unique new art venue is delightful. It is
a perfect way to show appreciation to
members who continue to give their
financial support, and at the same time
show the public the lives of the people your
organization serves. Allow the public to
